Understanding Filler Migration: What It Is & How We Treat It
In the world of aesthetic treatments, few topics stir up as much curiosity—and concern—as filler migration. You may have seen it discussed online or even noticed it in someone’s appearance. So what is it, exactly? And what can be done about it?
What Is Filler Migration?
Filler migration occurs when dermal filler moves from the location where it was originally placed. While this can happen gradually over time, the most common cause is the use of too much filler in a single area. For example, when too much product is injected into the lips, the surrounding tissue may not be able to accommodate it. As a result, the filler follows the path of least resistance, often migrating beyond the borders of the lips. This can lead to a “duck-like” appearance or unnatural lines and puffiness around the mouth.
Why Does It Happen?
There are several contributing factors to filler migration, including:
Overfilling a treatment area
Poor injection technique
Weak or thin tissue structure
Repeated treatments without proper assessment
Even though it’s not always avoidable, the most common culprit is simply too much product.
What Can Be Done?
If the migrated filler is made from hyaluronic acid (HA)—which many popular fillers are—there’s good news: it can be dissolved safely and effectively. At Lake Oconee MedSpa, we use Hylenex, an enzyme that breaks down artificial HA. The great part? It targets only the filler, leaving your body’s natural hyaluronic acid untouched.
Dissolving migrated filler is a straightforward in-office procedure and can be the first step in restoring a more natural appearance before re-treating the area with a more conservative approach.
