CoolSculpting® vs. Sofwave™ vs. T-Shape 2: What’s the Difference?

With so many body contouring and skin tightening treatments available today, it can be difficult to understand what each device is actually designed to do. While marketing can sometimes make treatments sound similar, the reality is that each technology works differently and is FDA cleared for very specific purposes.

At Lake Oconee MedSpa, we believe in educating patients so they can make informed decisions about their aesthetic goals. Whether you are looking to reduce stubborn fat, tighten loose skin, or improve the appearance of cellulite, understanding the difference between these treatments is key.

As Marissa Highnote explains, “I always want patients to understand what a device is truly designed to do versus what marketing may imply. Different technologies serve different purposes, and choosing the right treatment depends on your specific goals.”

CoolSculpting®: Targeting Stubborn Fat

CoolSculpting® is FDA cleared for non-invasive fat reduction using cryolipolysis, commonly known as fat freezing. The treatment works by freezing fat cells, which damages the fat cell walls. Over time, the body naturally processes and eliminates those destroyed fat cells.

According to Marissa Highnote, “CoolSculpting is designed specifically for fat reduction, not skin tightening. Patients can typically expect about a 20–25% reduction in the treated area per session, and treatments can be stacked for additional reduction.”

CoolSculpting® is FDA approved to treat areas including:

  • Under the chin

  • Jawline

  • Abdomen

  • Flanks (“love handles”)

  • Thighs

  • Back

  • Underneath the buttocks

  • Upper arms

One of the biggest benefits is that there is little to no downtime, and the treatment is safe for all skin types year-round.

Sofwave™: Tightening and Lifting the Skin

While CoolSculpting focuses on fat reduction, Sofwave™ is designed for skin tightening and lifting.

Sofwave™ uses ultrasound energy to stimulate the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid beneath the skin. The result is firmer, tighter, more youthful-looking skin without surgery or downtime.

“Sofwave is an excellent option for patients who are more concerned about skin laxity, crepey skin, or loss of firmness,” says Marissa Highnote. “It’s one of my favorite treatments because it addresses collagen stimulation in a way that creates natural-looking results.”

Sofwave™ is FDA cleared for:

  • Lifting the eyebrows

  • Tightening the jawline

  • Tightening the neck

  • Tightening the arms

  • Improving fine lines and wrinkles

  • Improving the appearance of cellulite

  • Treating acne scars

Most patients require just 1–2 treatments, with results that can last up to a year. Like CoolSculpting®, there is no downtime and it is safe for all skin types year-round.

T-Shape 2 Artemis: Temporary Cellulite Improvement & Circulation Support

T-Shape 2 Artemis combines laser technology, radiofrequency, and suction with the goal of improving body contour and temporarily reducing the appearance of cellulite.

However, it is important to understand what the device is specifically FDA cleared for.

According to Marissa Highnote, “T-Shape 2 can be a helpful option for temporary cellulite improvement and circulation support, but it’s important for patients to understand that it is not FDA approved for permanent fat removal or skin tightening.”

The device is FDA cleared for:

  • Temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite

  • Relief of minor muscle aches and spasms

  • Temporary improvement in local blood circulation

Treatments are commonly performed on the:

  • Abdomen

  • Back

  • Thighs

  • Buttocks

  • Face

  • Neck

Unlike Sofwave™ or CoolSculpting®, patients generally require 6–12 sessions for optimal results.

Which Treatment Is Right for You?

Choosing the best treatment depends entirely on your goals.

  • If your primary concern is stubborn fat pockets, CoolSculpting® may be the best option.

  • If you are noticing loose skin, crepey texture, wrinkles, or loss of firmness, Sofwave™ may be a better fit.

  • If you are looking for temporary cellulite improvement and circulation support, T-Shape 2 may help complement your treatment plan.

At Lake Oconee MedSpa, every treatment plan is customized based on your anatomy, skin quality, and desired outcome.
